RV Motorhome Insurance Policy
Because your trailer or RV is a ‘home on wheels’ you may tend to carry a
lot of personal belongings, electronics, and all the comforts of home.
Therefore, you need to think carefully about insurance for your RV.
Unlike a motorcycle, or even an automobile, an RV has the potential to carry a lot more
valuable possessions and as a much larger vehicle, it can do more damage if it runs into something or
someone.
Many RV owners simply insure their vehicle under their auto policy, but that coverage may
not be adequate for the unique accidents, property damage or limits of coverage issues an RV owner may
encounter.
Although the personal property you carry in your RV may be covered under your homeowner’s
policy, there are limits to coverage on many policies for items that are stored or kept ‘off
premises’.
After you pay your deductible, these limits on your coverage may end up paying you little
or nothing for theft or damage to the personal property you lost while it was carried or stored in your
RV.
If your insurance agent does not carry RV insurance policies, you may have to look to an
insurance company that specializes in RV insurance.
The cost is not high, and it is much more cost effective than finding out your possession
are not covered after someone breaks into your RV.
With the right coverage, you can replace your RV, at replacement cost, if it is
stolen or damaged beyond repair within the first five years of purchase of a new vehicle.
After year five, you can be reimbursed the amount of the original purchase of the
RV.
The same kind of coverage applies to motor homes, travel trailers, fifth wheel
trailers. This coverage applies to accessories like awnings, satellite dishes, and air conditioners and
heaters.
You should talk to a knowledgeable insurance agent about what kind of policy you need for
YOUR vehicle.
You can obtain high liability insurance and limits at a higher premium, if you need them
for risky travel plans or if you plan to travel in an area with high crime or high accident rates.
Your coverage should include:
Ø Collision from vehicles, branches or overhangs
Ø Theft or vandalism
Ø Fire, windstorm or other weather related damage
Ø Theft or damage of personal possessions and accessories
from flood, people or animals
